WIRELESS FAQ'S
Q: What is wireless broadband connectivity?
A: Fixed wireless broadband provides high speed Internet access without cable, fiber or phone line connections. Data is securely transmitted wirelessly for two-way communications capable of data, video and voice.
Q: How do we get connected to the Internet?
A: We install a small antenna and radio unit on the roof or side of your house or building. The antenna is then aimed towards one of our Internet broadcasting towers. This establishes your wireless link to the Internet.Your computer or network is then connected via a cat 5 cable drop.
Q: How long does it take for installation?
A: Basic installs take around two hours to complete. Not all installs are equal and some may require more or less time to complete.
Q: Does rain, snow, fog or other weather affect service levels?
A: No our services are not directly affected by the weather.
Q: If my bandwidth needs grow can I increase my bandwidth speeds?
A: Yes! You can always increase your service levels based on your growing needs. The bandwidth adjustment can be done remotely and does not require a site visit.
Q: DSL and or CABLE internet is not available in our area, will that prevent us from getting your wireless services?
A: NO! Our wireless services do not use fiber or any other terrestrial land links to connect you to the Internet and there for we are not constrained in offering our services based on availability of these facilities.
Q: Why is your wireless service better than cable or DSL?
A: Cable services speed and performance are based on how many users are using in your area. A cable connection will slow down with each additional user on the network. DSL service quality depends on your distance from the nearest central office. If you are further than 18,000 feet you do not even qualify. Wireless Internet is not affected by any of the above downfalls. Our wireless has symmetrical service available which means your upload speeds are as fast as your download speeds. Cable and DSL are Asymmetrical services, they allow you fast downloads while your uploads are allot slower than your downloads.
Q: Will my speeds be slower if I am far away from the tower?
A: NO. Our system will run at full speeds regardless of how far you are from the tower.
Q: Is your system compatible with VOIP?
A: YES! As a matter of fact we can provide you with a VOIP option as an add-on to your service with us.
Q: Will my companies VPN work with your system?
A: Yes! Our system supports VPN.
Q: Does online gaming work with your system?
A: YES! Our system is very low latency unlike satellite and other congested broadband systems.
Q: Do you have download limits/overage charges?
A: NO! We do not place limits or charge overages. However, you are not allowed to share you connection outside your home/apartment. We do not allow servers of any type on residential connections.

Our Mission Statement
Our mission is to become Michiana's leading high speed internet services provider. We are striving be become your first choice for broadband internet services when you are looking for speed, quality service, reliability and affordability. To accomplish this we as a company are making some changes.
First is our network - We are committed to providing our customer the most reliable services that is possible. To do this we are investing $100,000 over the next year to expand and advance our existing network. We will start by upgrading all our existing network infrastructure, which is happening right now. Our current network is being switch out and upgraded to the latest wireless technology from Motorola, utilizing GPS technology to help deliver todays most reliable connection.
Backbone Connectivity - This is our connection to the Internet. Now upgraded to Gigabit fiber connectivity (Thats 1,000,000,000 bits per second).
Expansions - We will be expanding our current coverage areas to enable service to locations that can not get service now. If you are in an area that needs coverage, please contact us and let us know. We will evaluate your area to see how we can bring you and your area service.
More frequent relay/tower locations - Part of the expansion will be adding more relay/tower locations closer to our customer base. This will help strengthen signal level to those that might other wise have marginal levels.
Next is affordability. Often people look into wireless broadband as last choice because of the entry cost. With most wireless providers charging $100, $200 or more just in install fee's, plus your first month of service, entry costs were typically high. Michiana Wireless is privately held wireless Internet service provide or WISP for short. We provide high speed Internet access to individuals and companies. We have been in the online service provider business since 1993 and have now been providing wireless broadband services to the Michiana area since 2002.
Technology - We utilize state of the art Microwave technology to deliver our high-speed data services. The technology is very reliable and is able to provide the equivalent if not superior performance and reliability to traditional wired solutions. We have the scalability and flexibility that does not exist with our wired competitors. As well as you will never come to work and find your T1 line is down because a crazy backhoe driver has severed the neighborhoods line trunk. Our complete backbone is 100% wireless all the way back to our NOC (Network Operations Center), which hooks, into a redundant fiber ring.
Why choose us over:
You’re Telco?
When you receive services from a Telco, typically a T1 or some other land line service you have a local loop fee. This fee is basically a charge for the ‘wire’ to carry your data on. You are then charged for the data that runs over the wire. They add these two items together to get your bill, which as you know is usually not cheap. We on the other hand being completely wireless, we eliminate the need for the local loop and its fee. This allows us to offer you more for your dollar.
DSL & Cable?
We service areas where DSL and Cable are often not available. Often DSL in rural areas does not work very well and runs slower than advertised speeds.
Some DSL providers require you to maintain a land line and it is also becoming more common for people to use the cell phone more and more and would like to get rid of the land line. With wireless you can! We do not use a telephone line to deliver your service.
Satellite Internet?
The cost of satellite equipment and installation is higher than wireless. Due to the long haul of the satellite link transmission delay or latency will be high. High latency makes a satellite link virtually unusable for anything other than low volume email or simple web surfing. Uploads on satellite links typically don’t get any faster than 80k. VPN sessions do not function well at all over satellite.
Also on satellite service you will often get throttled down to below dialup speeds if you use more than the allotted transfer amount. This is called their "Fair Access Policy", you can google this if you wish to verify.
Cellular Data - Many cell companies now offer a black box to that home and setup a hotspot for your computers to use the internet. As neat and convenient as this may sound to you, there is a downfall.
- COST - The monthly service is more money than our service
- OVERAGES - Cellular data services have set limits on how much you can transfer each month. And when you go over the allotted transfers they BILL you for additional data useage. If you are a decent internet users these overages can make your cellular data costs skyrocket! BEWARE!
- SPEED - Often unless you are lucky to live right by a near tower of the cellco speeds and reliability of the cellular data boxes are less than desirable.
Either way if you are using a DSL or Cable for your business you are using a residential type service for commercial purposes. The residential SLA (Service Level Agreement) for most cable and Telco providers has clauses that could make you wait up to a week for repair services. Our commercial services are true commercial services and are treated as such with top priority to resolve any issue with connectivity immediately.
Network Monitoring - We monitor our entire network backbone as well as each individual customer’s connection to our infrastructure 24 hours a day 365 days a year. This allows us to keep things up and operational and to proactively attack any potential problems before or as they may happen.
